Hui-ā-Iwi in Kaikōura

What an unforgettable weekend we had at Hui-ā-Iwi in Kaikōura! From the moment we arrived, it was full of whanaungatanga, laughter, and a deep sense of connection.

We kicked things off on Friday with the pōwhiri, where some of our rangatahi stepped up to speak on the paepae. Watching them take on this responsibility was a proud moment for us all—it’s a reminder of the importance of creating spaces for our rangatahi to grow and shine as they carry our kaupapa into the future.

Saturday was all about Te Atakura, and what a day it was! An early start saw us squeezing in a quick practice before hitting the stage. Our kapa haka rōpū did amazing, and we were buzzing with pride as another one of our rangatahi delivered the kōrero for our performance. Sharing the stage with our Ōnuku whānau made the experience even more special, further strengthening our Irakehutanga and reminding us of the power of kotahitanga.

After our big day, we wrapped up the evening with a huge feed of fish and chips back at the accommodation. The tamariki had a blast hanging out in the pool, and the rest of us enjoyed time together, reconnecting and sharing stories.

Sunday came too quickly, and saying our goodbyes was bittersweet after months of kapa haka practices and the weekend’s whanaungatanga. But it’s sparked a desire to create more opportunities to come together and keep the momentum going.

A huge mihi to Dominee for bringing Ōnuku into this kaupapa, to Kenny for his guidance and leadership during kapa haka practices, to Charisma and Taiki for composing & teaching new waiata, and to all whānau who showed up throughout the months and made the weekend one to remember!
